Strengthening cooperation with the Russian Federation on radiation and nuclear safety

On February 02, 2015, within the framework of the 7th session of the Coordination Committee on Atomic Energy Cooperation for peaceful purposes, took place meetings of working groups: Group 1 on Legislation and radiation and nuclear safety issues, Group 2 on Atomic Energy use for peaceful purposes and Training, and Group 3 on Research and Nuclear S&T Center.

Deputy Director of Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety (VARANS) Lê Quang Hiệp chaired the meeting of Group 1 on Legislation and Radiation and Nuclear Safety issues. Participating in the meeting, in the Russian Federation side were representatives from the Embassy of Russian Federation in Vietnam, Russian Atomic Energy Group - Rosatom and the Federal Agency on Industry, Environment and Nuclear Inspection - Rostechnadzor. In the Vietnamese side were leaders from the Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Science and Technology, Vietnam Atomic Energy Agency and leaders of departments under VARANS.

In the meeting, the two sides have reviewed cooperation activities over the past time. In 2010, VARANS and Rostechnadzor signed the cooperation agreement in the legislation field of radiation and nuclear safety in atomic energy use for peaceful purposes. Then so far many cooperation activities between the Agency and Rostechnadzor, the Agency and Rosatom have been implemented. Deputy Director highly appreciated cooperation results especially in training human resources and consultants. The results have contributed to improve the professional level of the Agency’s staff as well as the Agency’s capacities in managing radiation and nuclear safety. Regarding cooperation for the coming time, the two sides have discussed and propopsed long-term cooperation plans as well as special cooperation activities in -2016.

The two sides have also discussed about mechanisms for cooperating and sharing information between each other in order to achieve the highest cooperation efficiency.
